Issues in Using Shared IPs for Websites

Using a shared IP is a common practice in the web hosting world and is one of the easiest and cheaper way to do. The fact is that our web host provider hosts several websites on the same server as ours. While some of these websites are good and useful ones, there are many other sites which belong to bad category and are spammers. These all categories of website share the same server / IP address, which may turn out to become bad to our sites reputation and may affect our website.

The IP address of a website is the undress under which search engine finds and identifies websites on the internet. The search engines identifies the websites primarily by their IP address rather than the domain names. The IP address can be either a shared one or a dedicated one. In a shared IP address there may be many other websites which may be using the same IP address as yours.

In a dedicated IP address there would be only one website under a particular IP address. The dedicated IP address is costlier than the shared IP address, but in SEO point of view it is always advisable to go for a dedicated IP address. It has been noted that majority of the webpages on the first pages of Google SERP is having a dedicated IP address. So even though there are no clear evidence regarding this, studies reveal that a website with a dedicated IP address has more chances of appearing at the top of SERP (Search Engine Results Page).

In a shared IP address, if you share your IP address with a large number of website, your website might become slower. If any one of the other shared websites uses more resources, it may affect the speed of your website in a negative way. If the websites sharing your IP address belongs to a bad group or some spammy type, that will surely affect your sites and may also get penalized. If any of the websites sharing your IP address gets banned, then your site also has a higher chance of getting banned.

So while creating a new website, it is advisable to go for the dedicated IP address rather than going for the shared IP address, even though the former is a bit costlier.
